Church isn’t about sermons. It isn’t about singing. It isn’t about skirts and suits, and it isn’t about a building. Church is about people. And not just holy people.
Jesus said that he wasn’t interested in the people who have it all together. He came for the sick. And let’s face it, we’re all sick. Maybe it’s obvious to everyone around us, or maybe we’re the only ones who know; whether it’s public knowledge or our own little secret, we’re all sick.
At New Heights, we’re okay with that. We aren’t trying to transform into cookie cutter Christians. We’re just passionate about going deeper with God and each other.
Perfection isn’t our goal. Most of us messed that up a long time ago. Our goal is to have a group of people who want to know this Jesus guy better and are willing to take risks to do that. People who have given up on going it alone and are looking for someone to talk to, to share with, to listen to, to learn from, to teach, to laugh, and possibly even to cry with. People who have looked at this world, looked at themselves, and come to the conclusion that we’re all messed up, that everything isn’t right, and that change is needed.
For us, the answer to that change is simple. Not easy, but simple. Love God with everything we’ve got and love other people, put them first. That means talking to each other, going out for coffee, having people we can trust, ad committing to meet to share about life. It means encouraging people when they’re sick, broken, hurt, and lonely; going to visit in the hospital, cooking dinner when people are grieving, sitting, listening, sending a card or an email just to say, “I’m thinking of you.” It means supporting each other when we feel like giving up – at work, at school, with our families, in life. It means pushing each other to the next level (New Heights, if you like); equipping people to get closer to God, step out and take risks.
We all know that getting to where you want (or need) to be is hard, if not impossible, to do alone. That’s what community is about for us: having people around who will remind us that God is there to get us through and we’re there to help.
As a community we have the strength to do things none of us could have done alone.
